Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder Review

Leupold GX-4 RangefinderThe Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder was revamped last year in 2010 by making it even more accurate with new features that will literally coach you into playing a better game of golf. If you like the simplicity of point and shoot laser golf range finders you might want to consider what Leupold’s got in the bag.

Leupold is known for designing it’s products with the intention having them last for a long time. With a rugged build and sharp looking aluminum casing the Leupold GX-4 can be held, tossed, banged up, battered and still keep on firing accurate readings.

Optics System

Leupold is also known for optics that are designed for hunters and marksmen alike.  Their precision with their optics combined with microprocessors that calculate the range of the target is amongst the best in the world.Vivid red OLED by Leupold

The optics have been multi-coated and display clean and crisp images with low glare. The bright red OLED displays the distances much more clearly than most other golf range finder LCD displays.

Fog Mode

Designed to ignore the elements of perspiration and humidity Fog Mode scans clear through these environments measuring the right target thereby displaying an accurate reading which any golfer would want and deserve.

Prism Lock Technology

The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder comes with a new technology called the “Prism Lock” a flagstick is detected automatically when in this mode and their is a beeping sound notifying the golfer that the GX-4 has zoned into the prism-topped flagstick.

The purpose of the Prism Lock Technology removes the need to be extremely steady when targeting the pin. Currently 2,200 courses have been supplied with these specially modified prism-topped flagsticks.

PinHunter

What if you’re playing on a course which doesn’t have these special flagsticks? Leupold’s PinHunter Laser Technology has the ability to separate the pin from the brush. Plain and simple.

Scan Mode

When wanting to measure multiple targets the Scan Mode provides the solution.  Simply sweep across the horizon while continually pressing the Power button and the OLED display will update the different measurements. If the Prism Lock feature is enabled while panning across a prism-topped flagstick the GX-4 will lock on and freeze the display showing the exact distance to the pin.

True Golf Range

True Golf Range (TGR) technology gives you the power and knowledge by displaying a “play as” distance calculating certain factors into account when judging the next shot.  The incline or decline to the target plus the altitude and humidity are all computed by the Leupold GX-4′s microprocessor while in TGR mode which then displays an adjusted super accurate range measurement. You’ll never 2nd guess your club selection again.

Club Selector

With all this robust technology you would think that Leupold is done and now it’s up to you to choose your club. Wrong.  Club Selector does this for you by logging your distances averages for 3 specific clubs combined with the True Golf Range technology distance measured and then recommends the right club for you. It does all the thinking for you so you can concentrate on what’s important, your swing. Wow it’s like having your own personal instructor!

Smart Key

The Smart Key enables the above mentioned TGR and Club Selector features when attached to the Leupold GX-4. Because it snaps on to the front of the aluminum body of the GX-4 Rangefinder like a faceplate everyone will be able to see the bright yellow Smart Key.  The standard chrome faceplate returns the Leupold GX-4 into a simple point and shoot golf range finder which would make it completely legal for tournament play.

So in essence it’s like have two devices in one without the extra cost and weight of a second golf range finder. The GX-4 is currently the only unit on the market with the Smart Key type ability.Leupold GX-4 two for one!

“Unmatched versatility is the name of the game with Leupold GX-4. It can serve as a tournament legal rangefinder or, with the Smart Key, be employed with the TGR and Club Selector features in casual or practice rounds to help any golfer play the right shots and improve their scores.”

Rangefinder delight
I have owned a number of golf rangefinders so with that I think I can make a good comparison.  The Leupold GX-4 is in a higher class of functionality compared to my older NIkon LR1200. This is what impresses me about the GX-4 above the other golf rangefinders.
1.  The build which is an aluminum body with a rubber grip while being compact in size.  It’s not a cheap design, more like the quality of a Lexus. cont…. (This owner’s review has been paraphrased for uniqueness. If you would like to read the full review go to this link here.)

Very Very good
The PinHunter tech works wonderfully without having to scan.  The GX-4 is a very good rangefinder with all the features. I use laser rangefinders which I prefer from GPS unit because of the exact yardage that I want rather than a ballpark number.  My handicap is 7.9. cont… (This owner’s review has been paraphrased for uniqueness.
